Sitka Lighthouse

Sitka, Alaska

There are very few places that make you feel as though you've stepped completely outside the world. The Sitka Lighthouse is one of them.

The experience begins with a short boat ride across the water to your own private island. Once you arrive, you're handed the keys to a small skiff—the boat you'll use throughout your stay to ferry yourself back and forth to the mainland whenever you choose. It's an unexpected detail that transforms the entire experience.

The crossing takes only ten or fifteen minutes, but each trip feels like a small adventure. By the time you tie the boat to the dock below the lighthouse, the mainland already feels wonderfully far away.

Surrounded by open water, forests, and wildlife, the island settles into its own quiet rhythm. Bald eagles drift overhead. Sea otters appear without warning. Depending on the season, whales surface just offshore. There is no itinerary to follow and no pressure to fill the hours. The setting does all the work.

The weather becomes part of the experience, too. Powerful coastal storms sweep through with remarkable force, often followed by brilliant sunshine that transforms the landscape all over again. It's the kind of place where you find yourself stopping whatever you're doing simply to watch the sky.

What I remember most, though, is the feeling of complete separation. For a few days, the lighthouse doesn't feel like a place you're visiting. It feels as though you've borrowed your own tiny corner of Alaska.

Some places are memorable because of what there is to do.

This one is unforgettable because it reminds you how little you actually need.
