Under Canvas Mt Rushmore

Keystone, South Dakota

To be honest, Mount Rushmore was never high on my travel list.

It wasn't that I didn't appreciate its history. I just couldn't imagine traveling all that way to see something I'd already seen hundreds of times in photographs and on television. How different could a giant carving in a mountain really be?

As it turns out, completely different.

What surprised me wasn't just Mount Rushmore—it was the Black Hills themselves. Dense pine forests. Crystal-blue lakes. Miles of scenic bike trails winding through the landscape. It felt far more like a mountain retreat than the roadside attraction I had imagined, and before long, I found myself wondering why I'd waited so long to visit.

What made the trip truly unforgettable, though, was staying at Under Canvas Mount Rushmore.

Each evening ended inside a beautifully appointed safari-style tent with impossibly comfortable beds, hot showers, and a wood-burning stove that filled the canvas with the comforting crackle of a real fire. After a day outdoors, it felt both adventurous and wonderfully indulgent.

There is something magical about falling asleep surrounded by the sounds of the forest while still wrapped in every comfort you hoped for.

I went expecting to check Mount Rushmore off a list.

Instead, I left planning my return.
